Bladder infection, what conventional medicine calls cystitis, is not, according to Aajonus Vonderplanitz, a disease of the bladder. It is not a pathological failure of the organ, and it is not a condition caused by dangerous bacteria invading a healthy system. Instead, it is a **detoxification of the urinary bladder**.
Aajonus's Definition
Bladder infection, what conventional medicine calls cystitis, is not, according to Aajonus Vonderplanitz, a disease of the bladder. It is not a pathological failure of the organ, and it is not a condition caused by dangerous bacteria invading a healthy system. Instead, it is a detoxification of the urinary bladder.
In his own words: "BLADDER INFECTION is a detoxification of the urinary bladder characterized by pain in the lower abdomen and back, sometimes fever, and an urgent, most often painful, frequent need to urinate."
The bladder itself is a simple reservoir organ. Its entire function is to hold urine so that the human body does not urinate continuously on itself as the kidneys constantly filter excess fluid from the bloodstream. The bladder has no productive or secretory function, it does not manufacture anything. It is purely a holding vessel, and as Aajonus repeatedly stated in his workshops: "The bladder, of course, is just a place to hold water so you're not keeping a roll of yourself all the time." He elaborated: "It's a place to hold the water so that you can urinate and discard a lot." And again: "So, you have a bladder to hold it. And when there's a, you know, a cup up to a pint of urine, then you go to the toilet."
Because the bladder is a reservoir, when toxic material accumulates in the cellular walls of that reservoir, the body initiates a cleansing response. That cleansing response is what manifests as what doctors call a bladder infection or cystitis. The bacteria present in that infection are not the cause, they are the remedy.
---
Root Cause
The root cause of bladder infection, in Aajonus's framework, is toxicity entering the cellular walls of the bladder. As he stated directly in a workshop: "If you've got bladder infections, why do you have a bladder infection? Some toxicity is getting into cellular walls of the bladder. It's not a bladder condition. It is a dietary condition, an environmental condition of poisons getting into those tissues."
He laid out two primary categories of causation:
A. Dietary Causes Poisons that are introduced through the diet accumulate in the body over time. These include processed and cooked vegetable oils, cooked proteins, synthetic chemical additives in food, and all manner of industrially produced substances that the body cannot use and must eventually discharge. When these substances concentrate in or around the bladder tissues, the body must attempt to eliminate them. The bladder, being directly in the urinary pathway, becomes a site for such elimination.
B. Environmental / Chemical / Medical Causes Aajonus cited specific toxic substances that collect in urinary tissues:
- Sulfur-based antibiotics: He discussed these explicitly in the context of bladder infections, noting that they were often prescribed for bladder and kidney infections in childhood, and that sulfur drugs dehydrate the system as a short-term suppression of symptoms. He said: "So that's why they use [sulfur antibiotics] for bladder and kidney infections. Dehydrate those symptoms. However, when it does that, it doesn't correct the condition of those toxins stored in the urethra or bladder or kidney or all three. It stops it and causes a worse condition because now you've [added sulfur toxicity to the system]."
- Iodine from medical procedures: In a case involving a woman who had undergone a D&C (dilation and curettage) following a miscarriage, Aajonus identified iodine used to clean the uterus as a likely source of the urinary urgency and discomfort she was experiencing a year later. He stated: "Additional harm to the area may have been caused by iodine used with the D&C. I would suspect that it was because, often, there is [residual iodine that gets stored in tissues]." He noted: "It takes 40 years on a perfect diet to cleanse the body completely. Remember that an infection is a cleansing. As I stated in my books, any part of the body where there had been a problem has not been properly cleansed and healed and will cleanse and heal periodically with old symptoms returning."
- Heavy metals from vaccines (mercury, aluminum, lead): In the case of Aajonus's own bladder stone, which developed from childhood and was not discovered until age 59, he identified the root cause as heavy metals from tetanus shots received as an infant and child, as well as environmental lead from car exhaust. As he described: "Obviously to me, my bladder is where my body tried to rid itself of the neuro-toxic mercury and aluminum from vaccines. Probably because it had developed since infancy, my body simply acclimated by creating calloused bladder tissue and preventing pain." And: "What happened was, I started having trouble urinating from the time that I can remember, probably six, seven months old... back then the mercury from all those vaccines that I got tetanus shots had collected in my bladder and started forming a huge stone."
- Cipro and other fluoroquinolone antibiotics: When someone had a bladder infection following a laser procedure and was prescribed Cipro, Aajonus warned explicitly: "Cipro causes HUS (hemolytic-uremic syndrome), that is, dissolving kidney disease. How wonderful of him to want you to damage your kidney to get rid of a detoxification of the damaged tissue in your bladder." He made the same point in relation to a Brazilian model who died of a urinary tract infection: "All of her symptoms toward death resulted from overmedication that resulted in anaphylaxis. A septic urinary tract is most often caused by antibiotics, especially Cipro."
- Soy-based foods and vegetable oils: In the case of a patient who developed bladder stones, Aajonus identified dietary toxins from soy chips and processed vegetable oils as contributors. The patient "lived on soy chips... There was mineral concentration there and the toxicity involved. So he was detoxing that all those years and it was causing crystals."
---
Why This Happens
Bladder infection falls squarely in the Detoxification and Microbes of Aajonus's philosophical framework.
Detoxification: The condition is explicitly defined as a detoxification event, not a disease. The body is attempting to purge stored toxins from the bladder's cellular walls. The symptoms (pain, urgency, frequency, fever) are the direct result of that purging process. As Aajonus stated: "Since swelling always indicates increased circulation to deliver more nutrients to swollen areas, I surmised that my bladder cells were detoxifying." The detoxification process, not bacterial invasion, generates the discomfort.
Microbes: The bacteria found in bladder infections, including E. coli, are the janitors, not the criminals. Aajonus stated directly: "Antibiotics are not going to help you. You've got an infection in there. Those are janitors. Why do you want to wipe out the janitors? There's a janitor trying to make your bladder well, your kidneys well. Why would you destroy your janitors? Oh, it's paleo. Stop the infection. Yeah, but that's temporary. You're going to end up with a disease in your kidneys or bladder because you've gotten rid of your janitors."
He clarified the role of E. coli specifically when a patient asked about E. coli found in their urine: "The E. coli is never a problem anywhere in the body." He also noted that the presence of E. coli in urine can indicate prior antibiotic consumption: "E. coli in your urine indicates that you consumed antibiotics."
Root Cause / Terrain Theory: The condition is not a failure of the immune system or a random infection. It is the body responding to the presence of poisons. The terrain, meaning the internal environment created by diet, environmental exposure, and prior medical interventions, is the determining factor.
Sovereignty: Aajonus repeatedly framed accepting medical treatment for bladder infection as counterproductive to long-term health. Refusing Cipro, refusing sulfur antibiotics, and allowing the detoxification to complete were all positioned as acts of bodily sovereignty and intelligence.

Symptoms Reframed
Aajonus reinterpreted each conventional symptom of bladder infection / cystitis as a meaningful part of the healing process:
Pain in the lower abdomen and back: This pain signals that the body is working. Toxicity stored in the bladder's cellular walls is being mobilized and expelled. Aajonus experienced this personally during his bladder stone episode: "The pain returned every time I had to urinate and that was more frequently than normal for me." He described bladder swelling as indicating "increased circulation to deliver more nutrients to swollen areas", a positive sign of healing activity, not damage.
Urgent, frequent, and painful need to urinate: This is the body flushing toxins through the urinary pathway at an accelerated rate. The body is using the bladder and urethra as the exit route for accumulated poisons. It is not a sign of dysfunction but of intensified cleansing activity.
Fever: Mentioned as a characteristic of bladder infection, fever is consistently reframed in Aajonus's system as a healing mechanism, the body raising its temperature to accelerate the processes of decomposition and elimination of toxic material and dead cells.
Prickly or burning feeling during urination: In a Q&A exchange with a patient who reported "a small prickly feeling every time it collects in my bladder, as well as when I relieve myself," Aajonus attributed this to damage from antibiotics and/or a laser procedure, noting: "If the doc lasered your bladder, it will likely cause discomfort until it is completely healed: 3-6 weeks?"
Inability to urinate freely: In Aajonus's own case, complete urinary obstruction was caused by a massive bladder stone, not by infection per se. But partial obstruction and slow, narrow stream are consistent with buildup of toxic material and/or stone formation in the bladder tissues. He described having to "lift my leg like a dog" to urinate, which shifted the stone enough to allow flow.
Strong uncomfortable urge to urinate without actual accumulation: When a patient reported a "very strong uncomfortable urge to urinate, even though I had already gone to the bathroom," Aajonus identified this as a detoxification, specifically a return of an old symptom associated with a D&C procedure. He stated: "Remember that an infection is a cleansing... any part of the body where there had been a problem has not been properly cleansed and healed and will cleanse and heal periodically with old symptoms returning."
E. coli in urine: Not a problem. "The E. coli is never a problem anywhere in the body." E. coli is a cleanup organism present in the body to assist with decomposition of waste matter. Finding it in urine is a sign that the body is cleansing, not that something dangerous is occurring.

Food Protocol
Aajonus gave highly specific protocols for bladder infections, varying based on the severity and situation:
Raw fresh grapefruit juice: "Drinking raw fresh grapefruit juice throughout the day" during active infection. No specific quantity is listed beyond "throughout the day," indicating it is to be consumed continuously as the primary liquid during the acute phase.
Butter and honey mixture: "Eating the butter/honey mixture every ½ hour for as long as it takes to calm the bladder, relieve bladder infections." This is the central acute-phase remedy, repeated every 30 minutes continuously until bladder calms. Aajonus also mentioned this mixture personally during his bladder stone episode: "Many times I ate unheated honey/butter mixture to reduce pain."
Unripe banana with raw butter (for pain): During his own bladder stone detoxification, Aajonus documented eating "about 2 inches of unripe banana with 2 tablespoons raw butter to reduce pain." This is a pain-reduction pairing using the unripe banana's starch and the fat of raw butter to absorb and buffer the toxic discharge.
Aajonus offered two specific preventive formulas for those who experience recurrent bladder infections:
Option 1: Raw fresh beet juice "Drinking 4 ounces of raw fresh beet juice twice weekly... keeps bacteria levels low and helps detoxify the bladder a little every day so that discomforting, exorbitant infection is rarely, if ever, necessary."
Option 2: Fresh raw lime juice with honey and mineral water "4 ounces fresh raw lime juice blended with 2 tablespoons unheated honey added to 4 ounces of good mineral water", taken with the same frequency (the text implies daily use). "Raw lime and beet juices and fresh raw corn on the cob regulate bacteria levels so that infection does not become excessive."
Note that both options are described as achieving the same goal: keeping bacteria levels at a manageable level through ongoing low-level detoxification so that a major acute infection becomes unnecessary. The logic is that if toxins are being gently cleared a little at a time, the body does not need to mount a large-scale infection-detoxification event.
(kidney infection protocol that Aajonus cross-referenced with bladder infection):
"Drinking a large glass of good mineral water with 3 tablespoons fresh raw lime juice and beet or ½ cup raw fresh vegetable juices (that includes 1 ounce beet juice) with 3 ounces of good mineral water ½ hour before eating has nurtured and soothed the kidneys."
He noted: "If there is blood in the urine, it is best to stay off the feet and remain sedentary."
When antibiotics had already been taken, and the bladder was experiencing discomfort as a result of both the infection/detox AND the antibiotic damage, Aajonus prescribed a custard formula. He specified:
"Custard was to help correct damage by antibiotics. I suggest having it 2-3 times weekly for 10 weeks."
He also recommended: "You could consume about 2 teaspoons of wet clay (see my book) with a vegetable juice or smoothie to help absorb antibiotic residues."
In a related case involving urethra pain following kidney/gallbladder stone passage, where all other measures had provided limited relief, Aajonus recommended transitioning to "a raw milk diet only." He noted: "Within 24 hours, all of his pain subsided. I suggest adding 4-6 tablespoons raw cream and 2 tablespoons unheated honey to every 28 ounces of milk." While this was specifically for urethra infection/pain, Aajonus cross-referenced this condition with bladder infections, indicating the raw milk approach may have relevance for severe or persistent cases.
In cases of urinary/kidney irritation and chemical-related detoxification, Aajonus recommended his Sports Formula with raw apple cider vinegar: "My Sport Formula (with 2 T. raw apple cider vinegar) consumed daily, for at least one month, will give your body the nutrients to help it dissolve those inhaled [or accumulated] toxins."
For pain management and acceleration of healing during bladder detoxification, Aajonus recommended immersion in warm or hot baths. He documented this in his own case: "I immersed myself in a very warm bath that relaxed my entire body and I could cope with the pain relatively easily." He explained the mechanism: "If you apply heat, everything relaxes and it can allow for expansion, all that nutrients coming into the area with very little pain or no pain. That simple. So, apply heat in all conditions." A hot water bottle applied to the lower back over the kidney area was also recommended.

What to Avoid
- i
This is Aajonus's most emphatic warning. Antibiotics destroy the very bacteria that are doing the cleanup work in the bladder. They are categorically counterproductive. As he stated: "Antibiotics are not going to help you.
- ii
He elaborated on the long-term consequences: by suppressing the acute detoxification with antibiotics, the underlying toxins remain stored in the tissues, and the condition will return, but now without the full complement of bacterial janitors available to address it. This leads to chronic conditions rather than acute, self-resolving ones.
- iii
Cipro is singled out repeatedly by Aajonus as specifically dangerous for kidney and bladder conditions. "Cipro causes HUS (hemolytic-uremic syndrome), that is, dissolving kidney disease." He documented a case of a young girl who was treated with Cipro for an E. coli infection and died: "They blamed the E. coli on creating HUS which is a kidney disease. But it was the Cipro which killed the little girl." He told one patient who was offered Cipro after bladder stone removal: "Don't worry, I won't take it... Congratulations [the doctor] want[s] you to damage your kidney to get rid of a detoxification of the damaged tissue in your bladder."
- iv
A separate warning applies to sulfur antibiotics, which were commonly prescribed for bladder and kidney infections historically. These "dehydrate the system" as a mechanism for suppressing urinary symptoms, but Aajonus stated this does not resolve the underlying toxicity: "When it does that, it doesn't correct the condition of those toxins stored in the urethra or bladder or kidney or all three. It stops it and causes a worse condition because now you've [accumulated sulfur toxicity on top of the original problem]." He documented a case where a woman who had received sulfur antibiotics for bladder infections as a child later developed spontaneous chemical burns on her skin (specifically over the kidney area on her lower back) as the sulfur was eventually expelled through the skin.
- v
Aajonus was specifically critical of the conventional advice to "drink lots of water" for bladder infections. He explained that plain water dilutes the acids and bacteria in the digestive and urinary systems, and forces the kidneys to work harder to dump excess fluid, resulting in lighter and lighter urine. This does not provide the nutrients needed for healing and actively dilutes the body's bacterial workforce. He consistently preferred mineral water or nutrient-rich fluids (raw juices, raw milk, the Sports Formula) over plain water.
- vi
Aajonus addressed this in the context of a patient whose bladder had been lasered by a physician: "If the doc lasered your bladder, it will likely cause discomfort until it is completely healed: 3-6 weeks?" This indicates that laser procedures create additional damage that prolongs the healing process and adds injury on top of the original detoxification challenge.
- vii
Since bladder infection is defined as a dietary and environmental condition, "an environmental condition of poisons getting into those tissues", continuing to consume the substances that deposited those toxins in the first place will perpetuate or worsen the condition. These include: processed soy products (soy chips, soy milk, soy protein isolates), processed vegetable oils, synthetic food additives and chemical flavorings, cooked and denatured proteins, and foods or medicines containing heavy metals.

Recovery Timeline
Aajonus's statements about recovery timelines for bladder infections vary based on the specific circumstances:
Acute bladder infection without prior antibiotic damage: With the butter/honey protocol, grapefruit juice, and beet or lime juice, Aajonus implied the infection can be resolved relatively quickly, the butter/honey is taken "every ½ hour for as long as it takes to calm the bladder," suggesting resolution within hours to perhaps a day or two in most cases.
After laser procedure to the bladder: "3-6 weeks" for the bladder to completely heal from laser-caused damage and the associated discomfort to resolve.
After antibiotic damage: The custard formula is prescribed "2-3 times weekly for 10 weeks", approximately two and a half months of ongoing support. He also noted: "Probably, the antibiotic has been completely arrested but damage done may take several months to resolve. That is why I suggest that you continue consuming raw custard."
After old medical procedures (D&C, iodine exposure): When the detoxification is connected to a past medical procedure involving iodine or other caustic agents applied to nearby organs (uterus, cervix), and the bladder symptoms are the body cleansing those stored chemicals, Aajonus's broader framework applies: "It takes 40 years on a perfect diet to cleanse the body completely." The specific episode of urgency/discomfort may pass relatively quickly, but the deeper cleansing of the stored iodine residue from the tissue will continue to manifest periodically over years.
With ongoing susceptibility: For people who are prone to recurrent bladder infections, the preventive protocol (4 ounces beet juice twice weekly, or daily lime juice/honey/mineral water formula) is presented as an ongoing, indefinite practice, not a finite course. The goal is to keep the level of accumulated bladder toxicity low enough that the body can do small, manageable detoxifications continuously, rather than requiring large, painful, acute infection episodes.
Complete healing timeline for the whole system: Aajonus stated repeatedly across different conditions that complete cleansing of all stored toxins from the entire body "takes 40 years on a perfect diet." This is the backdrop against which any individual detoxification episode, including bladder infection, must be understood. Any area of the body that has been previously damaged, exposed to toxins, or subjected to medical intervention will undergo periodic cleansing events as long as toxicity remains stored there, which can be many years into the healing process.

Questions Aajonus Answered
- Case 1: Strong Uncomfortable Urge to Urinate, D&C and Possible Iodine Exposure (January 2012)
Question: "Out of the blue this evening, I had a very strong uncomfortable urge to urinate, even though I had already gone to the bathroom. It feels like it did 20 years ago when I had a bladder infection. Keep in mind I have not had a bladder infection in 20 years. A friend of mine reminded me that I had an emergency D&C (dilation and curettage) last January as a result of a miscarriage that had gone very wrong. Could the strong uncomfortable urge to urinate be a result of the D&C? My friend said they might have used iodine to clean out the uterus and now I am detoxifying the iodine. What can I do to relieve this strong uncomfortable urge to urinate? It has been going on now for about 3 hours. Is it a bladder infection or something else?"
Aajonus's Response: "It takes 40 years on a perfect diet to cleanse the body completely. Remember that an infection is a cleansing. As I stated in my books, any part of the body where there had been a problem has not been properly cleansed and healed and will cleanse and heal periodically with old symptoms returning. Additional harm to the area may have been caused by iodine used with the D&C. I would suspect that it was because, often, there is [residual iodine stored in nearby tissues that is being expelled]."
- Case 2: Custard Formula for Urinary Situation / E. Coli in Urine (October 2008)
Patient had been on a custard formula for 5 consecutive days. Three questions were posed:
Question 1: "How many days should I take it for this urinary situation?"
Aajonus's Response: "Custard was to help correct damage by antibiotics. I suggest having it 2-3 times weekly for 10 weeks."
Question 2: "Happily, my urine remains light and clear, but there is a small prickly feeling every time it collects in my bladder, as well as when I relieve myself. Any thoughts?"
Aajonus's Response: "If the doc lasered your bladder, it will likely cause discomfort until it is completely healed: 3-6 weeks?"
Question 3: "Does having E. coli in my urine have anything to do with how it feels? Any recommendations?"
Aajonus's Response: "E. coli in your urine indicates that you consumed antibiotics. Yes, do not ever take antibiotics again."
Follow-up from patient: "I need to clarify about the E. coli. I had my last urine analysis on Tues 9/24 and they found 'bacteria' in the urine. This was BEFORE I took any antibiotic, not after. Hence, I gave in briefly. My apologies for not saying earlier when they noticed 'E. coli'. I seem to be improving well. Urination is freer and clear. Much less discomfort. I will continue taking the custard formula. Do you think I still have any bacterial infection from that one pill I took? Also, is it enough to put 3 Tbs of kefir and yogurt in each quart of milk I consume?"
Aajonus's Response: "The E. coli is never a problem anywhere in the body. Probably, the antibiotic has been completely arrested but damage done may take several months to resolve. That is why I suggest that you continue consuming raw custard. Also, you could consume about 2 teaspoons of wet clay (see my book) with a vegetable juice or smoothie to help absorb antibiotic residues."
- Case 3: After Bladder Stone Removal, Infection Found in Urine / Cipro Prescribed (October 2008)
Context: A patient had undergone a bladder stone removal procedure. Stone fragments had a "sandpaper effect" and made the bladder bleed. A subsequent urine test showed infection. The doctor found it "not quite what he wanted to see" and provided a free supply of Cipro antibiotics.
Patient's statement: "I'm guessing that I simply follow your remedies and let the bacteria and nature take its course."
Aajonus's Response: "Congratulations. Cipro causes HUS (hemolytic-uremic syndrome), that is, dissolving kidney disease. How wonderful of him to want you to damage your kidney to get rid of a detoxification of the damaged tissue in your bladder."
Additional preparation for follow-up medical visits: When the patient asked how to handle a visit where doctors might question urine acidity or antibiotic compliance:
Aajonus's Response: "They will probably tell you that your urine is too acidic and builds stones, and that you should eat or drink a lot of fruit. Acknowledge and thank them for any advice that they give. Tell them you took the antibiotics; you do not have to tell them how much."
- Case 4: Brazilian Model Who Died of Urinary Tract Infection (January 2009)
Question (referencing a news story): A Brazilian model died of a urinary tract infection.
Aajonus's Response: "When people have so much money, they have a tendency to go to medicine for all complaints/detoxifications, and rather than letting it run its course they search for the magic bullet. All of her symptoms toward death resulted from overmedication that resulted in anaphylaxis. A septic urinary tract is most often caused by antibiotics, especially Cipro."
- Case 5: Sulfur Antibiotics for Childhood Bladder Infections, Spontaneous Burns as Adult
In a newsletter and workshop, Aajonus described the case of a female patient who had been given sulfur-based antibiotics for bladder infections as a child. As an adult on the Primal Diet, she began experiencing spontaneous chemical burns on her lower back, specifically over the kidney area. Aajonus identified this as the body finally expelling the stored sulfur from those childhood antibiotic treatments through the skin. He stated: "That was spontaneous burning. And she had had sulfur drugs a lot. For bladder infections as a child. And, you know, I show you how, what I did for her. I tell you what I did for her. How it healed."
- Case 6: Bladder Swelling During Personal Stone Detoxification, Aajonus's Own Case (2006)
In his extensive newsletter and workshop documentation of his own experience, Aajonus described waking at age 59 with shooting pain in his lower abdomen following a meal of raw marinated shrimp. He was unable to urinate normally. He described the process:
"I realized I had bladder swelling. Since swelling always indicates increased circulation to deliver more nutrients to swollen areas, I surmised that my bladder cells were detoxifying. The pain returned every time I had to urinate and that was more frequently than normal for me. I had to lift my left leg every time before urination would trickle but seemed slower each time. By morning, I had to lift the leg and lean to my lifted-leg side. It was very awkward."
He documented his self-treatment: "Many times I ate unheated honey/butter mixture to reduce pain. Other times, I ate about 2 inches of unripe banana with 2 tablespoons raw butter to reduce pain. I urinated in bottles so that I would not have to travel to the bathroom."
He attributed the stone development to mercury and aluminum from tetanus vaccines received as an infant and adolescent, plus environmental lead from car exhaust: "The two and a half gallons of fluid that they threw [into] me to wash it out with the laser was black. Literally, the water was black. And I had to analyze it. It was high in lead and mercury and aluminum."
He also told the urologist: "I had slow urination since I could remember and that the stone probably developed as a result of the many tetanus injections I received as an infant and adolescent. Obviously to me, my bladder is where my body tried to rid itself of the neuro-toxic mercury and aluminum from vaccines."
